|Sibelco 20 years further down the road
|At the beginning of February 2006, Sibelco obtained a 20-year environmental permit for the exploitation of a new quarry and the construction of a new plant in Maasmechelen. Both will be located on the Steenweg op As (near Mechelse Heide Zuid), where a gravel exploitation has also recently been finalised.
The exploitation of the construction sand and the intermediate sand layers will be taken on first, followed by the extraction of the unique quartz sand. The construction of the brand new plant will start off in 2007.
Together with all the authorities, Sibelco will ensure an environmentally-friendly re-use of this exploitation. The quarry will be transformed into a splendid nature reserve, during and after its exploitation. This recovered nature park will eventually become part of the National Park.
